Fable Mountain | Small Batch Series | Grenache | 2017
Winemaker Tremayne Smith has used old bush vines to create this Grenache with minimal interference, and once again he’s come through with the goods. Not as powerful as your old-world Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache but with excellent complexity and flavours of sour cherry, strawberry and cranberry. It’s bottles like these that are the reason Grenache has been gaining popularity among the wine hipsters.
Nose & Palate
A light pale red colour with a bright aromatic and floral nose of sour cherry, strawberry and hints of baking spices. The wine is medium bodied and fruit forward on the palate with grippy tannins leading to a savoury finish.
Pairing
This wine likes to be paired with hearty meals. Hungarian goulash. Chilli basil duck. Mild Indian curry. Pretty much anything barbecued.
About the Winery
Situated on the edge of a wilderness reserve, against the rugged slopes of the Witzenberg Mountain Range in Tulbagh, Fable Mountain, with winemaker Tremayne Smith at the reigns, produces terroir-driven, natural expressions of Rhône varietals. Organic and biodynamic farming techniques are employed and there’s minimal intervention in the winery to maintain purity.
The mountains behind the vineyard tower over the vines and its influence is critical to the uniqueness of their site. Every morning the mountain casts a shadow over the farm, which has a cooling effect. In the Summer this allows the grapes to ripen slowly, retaining great natural acidity, and in winter the snowy peak helps keep the vines dormant for longer.
